about

PRINCI announces Slicing Shadows, the new EP following the release of her debut album PRINCI in 2018. Slicing Shadows traverses the tensions of redefining success from excess, beauty from pain, intimacy from isolation.

Slicing Shadows’ soundscape collides ideas of balance with chaos. Throughout the record PRINCI interweaves classical instrumentation with dissonant synths, syrupy vocals with cutting lyrics, staccato melodies with sustained strings.

Having previously worked with producers to craft her sound, Slicing Shadows is PRINCI’s first entirely self-produced EP. This has enabled PRINCI to release a fully-formed sonic reflection of her identity.

While Slicing Shadows is a thematic parallel to PRINCI’s earlier work, there is a distinct sense of uncertainty about the structures that once defined her ideas of success.

“The ideas of success, luxury and love that I used to sing about are all here...but now it’s about questioning their enablement of escapism. The cushion no longer works.”

The EP’s opener and lead-single “slicing shadows” sparks a sense of urgency for the record with synth stabs, descending strings and earnest vocal performance you make me feel so good inside, I don’t want to have to hide. In this case, the ‘you’ PRINCI refers to is herself – it’s about opening up, and honouring intuition.

The second track “unreleased” continues the idea of redefining one’s success. Through a soundscape of eerie high-pitched melodies and sharp percussion, PRINCI presents her ode to those who have ever doubted her.

In the EP’s centrepiece, “things u chase” PRINCI weaves her background in classical piano with experimental pop. The song reflects a newfound sense of musical space for PRINCI as she sings in fragments – all those things you wanted, they will leave you haunted / you’ve been chasing something, only you can give it to you.

“keep on” seamlessly dovetails from the concept of finding power from within. Described as a ‘spiritual anthem’, the track reflects notions of never giving up and trusting your instinct: your heart’s speaking clear / but your mind feeds it the fear. Perseverance is mirrored in the track’s relentless janggu line, a traditional Korean drum often used in ceremonies.

“Never lonely” is about experiencing intimacy while in isolation. Oozing with PRINCI’s exclamations of pleasure amongst a synth-line composed of warped vocals, the track is PRINCI’s ode to masturbation. It is both melancholic and cathartic.

The EP comes to a close with ‘i guess that’s it’, a delicate yet firm break-up track dedicated to independence: you know I / will always care / I just won’t be there. The only major key throughout the record, the traditional pop structure is a soft, cheeky finale to a tumultuous ride of what has been dissolving distractions to redefine one’s own idea of success – slicing shadows to get through to what really counts – doing you.
